It's been a horrible few weeks - got mum out of hospital, followed by the fiasco of weekend before last, huge vet bills etc and then Dad was taken into hospiatal on Monday with suspected 4th heart attack

Had to get social services in re mum as she is diabetic, frail and weak from stroke. They said, amongst other things about getting attendance allowance for mum. Also said I should be assessed as a carer. Does anyone know what this means?

Feeling very pressured and ESR still 110. Wish there was someone other than me for mum, dad and 5 kids. Dad came home last night - he has diabetes now too. I was nearly in tears. I was pushing mum's wheelchair to the hospital entrance and a nurse was pushing dad. Had to go and get the car up close or make 2 trips. Really worried I can't keep on doing all this and teaching full time ... but no option to work either.

Sorry - just wanted to ask about the carer part really. Maybe somebody knows or is a carer? Thanks for listening, Ailsa

Hi Ailsa,

This is dreadful what you are going through and something needs to be done quickly or you are going to be exhausted and there will be no-one to look after your Mum and Dad.
I don't know much about being assessed as a carer, but why not ring the NRAS helpline? I'm sure they will be able to help.
Have social services given you any help, such as getting carers in for your Mum and Dad?
I hope you can get something in place very soon.
Love, Doreen xx

Hello Ailsa,

Gosh you are unable to continue like that you poor poor thing. You def. need help with looking after
your parents if you are unable to give up your job. Gosh you need to speak with someone at length
otherwise the situation will distroy yourself.

Good luck

I know you love your mum and dad and feel responsible for their care but please think of yourself as well. With the amount of pressure you are under it's no wonder your RA is going bonkers. I only work part time and had to help look after my mum and dad recently and was exhausted. I think Doreen's suggestion to contact the NRAS helpline would be an excellent starting point. I really feel for you and will be thinking of you.

Hi Ailsa,

I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice regarding your carer's question but I just wanted to send over a big cyber hug! Sounds like you've got more than your fair share on your plate right now.

Hope you have a relaxing weekend in the sunshine

Thankyou for the advice and kind thoughts - really appreciate it. Things have moved apace! Mum and Dad agreed to social services doing an assessment and now have a carer at 9am and 9pm. They are also having some adaptations to the house. Meanwhile, I need to look into attendance allowance for them as they have to pay the full cost of the carers.

Hopefully we will have a quieter time for a while! Looking forward to the 'Tour of a Lifetime' concert in Liverpool tomorrow - some Osmonds, Bay City Rollers, David Essex and Leo Sayer! I feel a "We want the Osmaonds!" chant coming on!! XX Ailsa
